USC College’s art history department offers a window into various cultures of the past and present. The discipline explores all types of art and expression in context. Students can hone their observational, critical-thinking and conceptual skills through a B.A. or achieve a minor in art history, animation, theories of art or visual culture.

The art history department works with leading Los Angeles institutions, including the Huntington Library, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The city of Los Angeles provides living examples of art and architecture, from historic buildings to public art such as the Watts Towers to dozens of contemporary galleries. Students also can investigate historic artifacts within the College’s Archaeological Research Collection Lab (ARCLab). Paintings at the Fisher Gallery on campus and high-quality slide reproductions in the Architecture and Fine Arts Library are additional resources.

Throughout the year, a number of renowned international art scholars offer their expertise by participating in the Art History Lecture Series. Students also have the opportunity to collaborate with peers and faculty in the USC schools of Fine Arts and Architecture.
