What better place to study America than in Los Angeles, where a dramatic demographic evolution is taking place? In USC College’s American studies department, the United States is examined through a humanistic and social scientific perspective.

Faculty research the unique American identity, and how it has changed over the century through the comparative study of peoples, cultures, history and social issues. Close faculty interactions ensure that students gain a critical perspective on the diversity which is shaping the world. A special focus is placed on the Western United States.

By examining big-picture insights from many fields, including history, political science, religion, literature, art, film, philosophy, sociology and music, the department delivers an unmatched caliber of interdisciplinary training in the humanities and social sciences.

This breadth-with-depth philosophy defines the department’s major programs in American studies, African-American studies, Asian-American studies and Chicano/Latino studies, and a minor program in Jewish-American studies. The graduate program offers a Ph.D. for students interested in broad interdisciplinary training at an advanced level, and offers courses that integrate modes of inquiry from the humanities and social sciences.
