Chemistry is the study of the world at a molecular level, central to both the physical and life sciences. USC College’s chemistry department is home to Nobel Laureate George Olah, who was awarded the 1994 prize for his groundbreaking work on hydrocarbons, and other prominent chemists.

Chemistry faculty investigate a range of topics in the classical sub-disciplines of the field, including biological, inorganic, organic, physical and chemical physics. They are leaders in cutting-edge research on nanotechnologies, materials science, molecular robotics, enzyme catalysis and fuel cells.

Many faculty conduct studies in the department’s closely affiliated research centers—the Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute and the Center for Fast Transient Processes. The department also participates in many interdisciplinary efforts such as the newly formed Laboratory for Molecular Robotics.

The department offers undergraduate degrees and opportunities for undergraduates to gain hands-on lab experience by taking part in faculty research projects through a summer program. Original research is a major emphasis in the Ph.D. training program. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows take an active role in department research programs.
