USC College’s East Asian Area Studies program is interdisciplinary by design, drawing on faculty from various departments in the College and throughout USC. With a strong curriculum, faculty, East Asian Library and USC’s urban location, the program is poised for a leadership position in East Asian scholarship and research.

East Asian Area Studies (EAAS) is an interdisciplinary major administered by the East Asian Studies Center (EASC). This major is especially appropriate for students with a broad interest in East Asia, especially China, Japan and Korea. In addition to being an excellent “first major,” EAAS is a very attractive “double major” for students in other programs and in professional schools (Business, Cinema, Engineering, etc.) who want to make East Asia part of their personal and professional futures.

Graduate students are able to design a program of study based on individual scholarly and professional goals. Students choose from courses offered by departments and professional schools across the university, concentrating on one country (China, Japan, Korea) or with the aim of developing region-wide expertise. Students work closely with faculty advisors to design their program of study and to complete the required Master’s thesis. There are over sixty faculty members affiliated with the East Asian Studies Center whose teaching and research interests focus on the countries of East Asia.

This multidisciplinary approach to scholarship involves College faculty from anthropology, East Asian languages and cultures, economics, geography, history, international relations, linguistics and political science. The USC professional schools of architecture, business, cinema-television, communication, engineering, and policy, planning and development also play an active role in inspiring new insights in the department.
