USC College’s environmental studies department allows students to combine business or social sciences with the natural sciences to learn more about critical, current, environmental issues.

Close student-faculty interactions are the hallmark of the program. Faculty are experts in the fields of earth science, policy and management, environmental engineering, ethics, ecofeminism and more.

Through a hands-on approach, students can conduct field research living at the Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies on Catalina Island or participate in the USC Sea Grant program. International study opportunities abound. Students can spend a semester studying rainforest depletion, biodiversity, human environments or wasteland issues in Kenya, Costa Rica, Australia, Mexico or Canada.

On the graduate level, the department offers M.A. and M.S. degrees in environmental studies and environmental risk management. Directed toward the study of national and international environmental issues and policy problems, the environmental studies program offers three concentrations: global environmental issues and development; law, policy and management; and environmental planning and analysis. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for a career in the rapidly expanding environmental field, but is also well suited for students interested in teaching, government, business, law and consulting. The curriculum is flexible enough to allow students to incorporate specialized environmental research interests while also providing exposure to practical environmental policy issues along with environmental theory, methods and natural-resource economics.

The M.S. degree in environmental risk analysis focuses on providing advanced professional training for students with a B.S. degree in natural sciences or engineering. Students pursue a core program encompassing science, engineering, and computer modeling and simulations. This degree produces individuals with the analytical and problem-solving skills of natural scientists combined with the necessary training in finance and management needed in the business world.
