French and Italian studies at USC College lead to the mastery of the languages and their literary expressions, as well as the influences of art, literature and history in French- and Italian-speaking regions. In addition, students are taught how to interpret social and political issues and current trends in business.

Offerings from the Department of French and Italian include majors in French and Italian, which can lead to B.A. degrees, and minors in both languages. Italian is also an ideal complement to studies in music, international relations, communications, comparative literature and art history. The department encourages French students to study abroad with a semester in Dijon or in the USC program in Paris. Italian students can deepen their knowledge of Italian art, literature, history, politics and society through a year or semester in Verona, Milan or Florence.

Courses are small, discussion-driven and taught by highly ranked faculty. French instructors share expertise that encompasses 500 years of French culture. Italian faculty at the College are celebrated contributors to scholarship and literature.

Employment opportunities include internships with consular offices, companies with large local offices in Los Angeles, and work-abroad programs in French- and Italian-speaking countries. Faculty and staff have many contacts and keep students informed of opportunities.

At USC, language study transcends textbooks and dictionaries. The USC College Language Center offers computer and media technology that help students learn more about the language and people through film, television and small-group conversation.
