Selected Ph.D. and Postdoctoral Placements
The study of linguistics focuses on how human beings structure, process and acquire language. USC College has one of the nation’s leading linguistics departments, attracting many successful scholars from around the world.
Undergraduate degree programs include a B.A. or minor in linguistics, or a combined major in linguistics with philosophy, psychology, anthropology, East Asian languages and cultures, or sociology.
Courses deal with formal grammar, phonetics, semantics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, historical and cultural linguistics, and interdisciplinary approaches in combination with many other areas of the university. Students may work with faculty researching Iranian, Slavic, Semitic or Asian languages, or specialists in Spanish or computational linguistics. Interdisciplinary research in linguistics and other areas such as neuroscience or computer science is also available.
Linguistics graduates are well prepared for postgraduate options that reward finely developed analytic skills, including law, business, public policy, planning, artificial intelligence, telecommunications and education.
