Research Abstract:

Glucose homeostasis is a conserved evolutionary state that is critical to the normal physiological functions of humans and many animal species. Different sensory neurons belonging to the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral vasculature are actively monitoring the fluctuations in plasma glucose. In type 1 and advanced type 2 diabetes, hypoglycemia elicits a glucose counterregulation that is characterized by the activation of the sympathoadrenal response secretion of catecholamines. Our lab has been investigating the role of afferent sensors located in the hepatic portal veins and their contribution to the hierarchy of glucose counterregulation during hypoglycemic conditions. We and others have shown that portal vein afferents are crucial to the modulation of full sympathoadrenal response. Presently, I am studying the intricate cross talk between the portal and CNS glucosensors in mice during hypoglycemic states. The goal is to further elucidate whole body integration of hypoglycemic detections that is essential to the physiology and functionality of humans and animals.
