Description of Research

Summary Statement of Research Interests

Professor Messner researches the social construction of gender, with a particular interest in sport. His most recent book is It's All For the Kids: Gender, Families and Youth Sports (2009). The book focuses on persistence and change in sex segregation among adult volunteer coaches in youth soccer and baseball/softball organizations, and the ways that this sex segregation fits into the construction of symbolic race and class community boundaries. Messner's current research focuses on (a) gender in sports media; (b) gender in advertising; (c) race, gender and youth culture in high school yearbooks.
