Quintessential Classroom
By Elaine Paoloni
An afternoon spent reading about the Parthenon is one thing. But for
those interested in the classics, nothing beats the real thing.
Study abroad programs enhance the lessons learned inside classrooms at
USC and provide a context in which teachings can take on new meaning.
From organized coursework to weekend adventures on their own, study
abroad students have a chance to absorb the full experience of their
studiesand have the
time of their life doing so.
USC students may attend a program in Rome, at the Intercollegiate
Center for Classical Studies (ICCS), which is specifically geared
toward classics majors. Here, students are able to uncover the marvels
of ancient history and archaeology, Greek and Latin literature, and
ancient art. With a 2,000-year-old history transcending multiple eras,
the Eternal City is a living laboratory for classics students. The
semester-long program (fall or spring) allows students to earn up to 20
credits through classes taught by American and Canadian faculty at the
ICCS.
Those not majoring in classics, but with interest in the subject via
related majors such as history, anthropology or international
relations, can also join in the fun. USC students can attend a program
in Athens that presents similar educational and cultural opportunities.
The College Year in Athens program is offered on semester (fall or
spring) and yearly bases. In addition to earning a possible 16 USC
credits per semester, students partake in various fieldtrips, which are
aided by the programs convenient location close to the mountains,
countryside and alluring Greek islands.
