Distinguished and University Professorships
Three of the four professors who were appointed University Professor or
Distinguished Professor this year teach in the College. USC President
Steven Sample and a committee of Distinguished and University
Professors have awarded Distinguished Professorships to Jean-Jacques
Laffont, John Elliot Distinguished Chair in Economics, and T.C. Boyle,
Distinguished Professor of English. Thomas Jordan, W.M. Keck Foundation
Professor of Geophysics and Professor of Earth Sciences, has been named
University Professor.
On May 1, after the College Magazine went to press, Laffont died at the
age of 57 from cancer. We will remember Laffont in the next issue of
the College magazine. His obituary is posted online at
