To Vietnam, With Mom

By Pamela J. Johnson

Rachel S. Thurston, 33, who graduated from the Master of Professional Writing program in May, doesn’t waste any time.

Her short story, “Mama Chihuahua: The World’s Fiercest Travel Partner,” will appear in the travel humor anthology, What Color is Your Jockstrap? (Travelers’ Tales, 2006).

Thurston’s mother and longtime traveling partner, Karen Cluster Thurston, inspired the story. The pair has explored Nepal, Tibet, China, Chile and Croatia. This summer they went to North Vietnam.

Explaining why she calls her mom “Mama Chihuahua,” Rachel wrote: “It’s her behavior while traveling which makes her most like a small fighting dog. She’s impetuous, fierce and compelled to physically assault anyone bigger than her if our personal space is invaded.”
