Peace Prize for Human Rights Activist
Walter Williams, professor of anthropology, gender studies and history,
has received the Gandhi, King, Ikeda Award from the Gandhi Institute
for Reconciliation and Morehouse College. The award was presented in
conjunction with a special exhibit held at USC this spring. Williams
was recognized for his work during the peace movement of the 1960s and
efforts throughout his career to promote human rights for the gay,
lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. The Rev. Martin Luther
King Jr. was his role model, and during his time as an undergraduate at
Georgia State University, he invited King to speak, Williams said in
his acceptance speech.
