Janet Johnson, associate professor, music history and literature, specializes in early nineteenth-century literary and theatrical culture in Paris and French and Italian music and literature. She earned her Ph.D. in Musicology at the University of Chicago (1988), her MA and BA degrees at UCLA (1979, 1974), and took courses at the Ecole des Hautes Etudies in Paris (1980-82). Her most recent publications include the three-volume reconstruction and critical edition of Rossini's long-lost opera Il viaggio a Reims for the collected works published by the Fondazione RossiniThe New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 2nd ed. Earlier work appears in the Cambridge Opera Journal, the Journal of the American Musicological Society, Revue de musicologie and the Bollettino del Centrol Rossiniano di Studi, among other books and journals. Professor Johnson is a former post-doctoral Fellow of the Society of Fellows in the Humanities at Columbia University, and has held grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Philosophical Society, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Whiting Foundation. She has been a member of the musicology faculty at the USC Thornton School since 1987, and is currently an affiliated faculty member in comparative literature.
