Global East Asia

Three Global East Asia (EASC 360) study abroad courses will be offered during summer 2010 in China, Japan, and Korea. Students who are accepted and complete all course requirements will receive 4 units of upper-division USC credit.

"Global China 1800 to the present: The View from Shanghai and Beyond"

Global East Asia: Japan
"Tokyo and Beyond: Global Forces and Economic Transformation"
Taught by Professor Saori Katada, School of International Relations
Tentative dates: July 2-August 1
Location: Meiji University in Tokyo

Global East Asia: Korea
"Imagining Seoul: A Global Metropolis through Film and Literature"
Taught by Professor Sunyoung Park, Department of East Asian Languages & Culture
Tentative dates: July 2-July 31
Location: Ewha Womans University in Seoul

Course Benefits
Students accepted into the program will have all major travel-related expenses paid for by the East Asian Studies Center, including roundtrip international airfare from LAX, basic lodging and meals, and local transportation and entrance fees related to the course while abroad. Note: the 4 units of USC tuition and associated fees will not be covered by the program.
 
Eligibility
USC undergraduates from any school or major may apply for the Global East Asia program. The ideal candidate will have a solid academic background and will demonstrate a level of maturity appropriate for participation in a study abroad program. Prior multi-cultural experience will also be considered in the application process. At the time of application, students must:

1. Have successfully completed (or be in the process of completing) TWO language and/or area studies courses related to the country of study.
Sample list of AY 2009-10 courses that can be counted towards the two course requirement.

2. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Once accepted into the Global East Asia program, students must register for the summer study abroad course for which they applied and pay the 4 units of tuition and associated fees. The course must be taken for a letter grade.

Outreach
Upon return, students fulfill the program's outreach requirement by using their experiences abroad to create materials for publication on one of USC's East Asia online magazines.

If interested in applying for the Global East Asia program, please fill out the APPLICATION and include the following materials:

Personal Statement
Please explain your interest in the selected program, discuss your personal and/
or academic experience related to East Asia; no more than 2 double-spaced pages.

Two Letters of Recommendation
Letters should address your academic potential, personal maturity and motivation.

USC Transcript/STARS Report
Should include Fall 2009 semester grades; unofficial copy accepted.
