Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Early Modern Visual Studies, 2009-2011


The USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute (EMSI) and the Visual Studies Graduate Certificate (VSGC) program at the University of Southern California invite applications for a two-year Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship beginning Fall 2009.  The field of specialization is early modern visual studies. The Fellow will be expected to teach one course each semester and will be affiliated with one or more departments (Art History, English, History or one of the foreign language and literature departments).  EMSI will provide assistance to the fellow in finding appropriate research space at the Huntington Library.  The Fellow must have completed all of the work for the Ph.D., including the defense of the dissertation, by the beginning of the appointment, and must be within 5 years of receiving the Ph.D.  Each applicant should send an application letter, CV, and a brief description of his or her dissertation and current research, including information about how the libraries, museums, and other intellectual resources of the Los Angeles region might benefit the applicant’s research plans.  In addition, each applicant must request that a dossier or three letters of recommendation be sent by the deadline of March 15, 2009.  Send all materials to Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship Search Committee, c/o Department of History, SOS 153, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA  90089-0034.  USC strongly values diversity and is committed to equal opportunity in employment. Mellon Post-doctoral Fellowship in the history of the early modern Atlantic world, 2008-2010, at the USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute

The USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute seeks applications for a two-year Mellon Post-doctoral fellowship in the history of the early modern Atlantic world, c. 1500 to c. 1850. The annual stipend is $43,000 plus fringe benefits and a $1,000 travel allowance. The Institute, founded in 2003, is a partnership between the University of Southern California and the Huntington Library in nearby San Marino, California. The Institute sponsors 75 to 90 scholarly presentations each year, and has an annual workshop with the William and Mary Quarterly each May as well as an annual conference in April or May.  The fellow will teach one course per semester at USC, have research space at the Huntington, and will be expected to participate in Institute programs relevant to the fellow’s interests. Candidates must have completed all of the requirements for the Ph.D. by August 15, 2008.

Postdoctoral Appointment in the Literature of the American West, 2008-2010

The Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West and the Department of English at the University of Southern California together seek applications from recent PhDs whose work explores the literature of the American West for a new two-year postdoctoral appointment beginning in the fall of 2008.  The Institute on California and the West is a collaborative research and teaching initiative established between the Huntington Library and the University of Southern California (www.usc.edu/icw).  The postdoctoral position is to be split between a research appointment at the Huntington Library and a half-time teaching position (two courses per year) in the English department at USC.  Candidates must have completed their PhD by June 2008.  To apply, please send a letter of application, c.v., thesis abstract, no more than two thesis chapters, and two letters of reference to William Deverell, Director, Institute on California and the West, The Huntington Library, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, CA  91108 by April 1st.  Inquiries may be sent to deverell@usc.edu.  USC values diversity and is committed to equal opportunity in employment. Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West
Fellowship Competition: Summer 2008
 
 
The Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West is pleased to announce a fellowship competition for USC students working on doctoral theses exploring any aspect of the history and culture of the American West. The fellowships are for summer 2008, specifically to support research at the Huntington Library. Up to three fellowships will be granted of $7500.00 each.
 
The application packet must include:
 
A three to four page description of the thesis project and work expected to be pursued at the Huntington and a bibliography of Huntington sources germane to the project. Please note any external fellowships applied for or thus far granted. Please provide a list of two references (with contact information). Successful applicants agree to submit a statement at summer’s end describing the work accomplished. Please submit a current c.v. with the proposal.
