Advisement and Registration
All students should meet with a faculty adviser once a semester before registering for courses. Students are encouraged to consult with an adviser at any time during the semester, and several advisers are available in the weeks immediately prior to registration. Faculty advisers help students shape their major according to their evolving interests and the requirements for the English Major. Students should consult the Director of Undergraduate Studies and the department’s undergraduate staff coordinator about such matters as departmental clearances and course substitutions.
Before speaking to an adviser about registration, students must first consult the department’s online information page on Tracks and Requirements (see Extended Version there), and must bring a copy of their university STARS report with them to the advisement session.
Spring 2010 semester
Advisement for All Students in the Department of English
Faculty advising for Spring 2010 in the English Department will run from October 19 to October 23 (Monday to Friday). There will be several faculty advisers available every day. Online registration will begin just after we complete our regular advising. Please note that we will have JUST ONE WEEK of intensive advisement with many faculty on hand, and we strongly advise that you start early in the week when it is easiest to find an adviser.
A list of the faculty who are advising will be posted on our website and outside the department office. You may consult any adviser listed. You may also discuss your proposed courses with any other faculty member in the Department. If you are in Thematic Option in your first year, the TO office will advise you. The Undergraduate Coordinator in the department office will also be available for advising; you must make an appointment to see her.
BEFORE you speak with an adviser, please consult the following:
AFTER you have chosen your courses and times, come speak with us.
- You absolutely must bring your University STARS report with you.
- Your adviser will complete an Advising Record with you, which you must then bring immediately to the Undergraduate Coordinator in the English Department office.
The English Department now has three majors and two minors. They are described on the department and college websites:
- Major with emphasis in English Literature
Major with emphasis in Creative Writing

- Interdisciplinary Minor in Early Modern Studies

Registration is handled online by you with OASIS starting just after we conclude our advising in the English Department, so we urge you to start early.
