USC College Department of English

Prizes

William James Undergraduate Essay Prize

One or more prizes will be awarded for essays written in English courses during each academic year, with awards totaling $500.

  1. The prizes will be granted for critical essays only (no poetry or fiction), written during the 12-month period spanning one April to the next. Any critical essay written to satisfy the requirements of an English course may be eligible.
  2. All currently enrolled USC undergraduates may compete; contestants need not be English majors.
  3. Students may submit one essay each to Rebecca Woods in THH 404.
  4. Submissions should be clean copies (without marginal notes or comments by the instructor). Because the essays will be judged anonymously, the writer's name should not appear in the pages of the essay.
  5. Please include a cover sheet or index card stating the writer's  name, ID number, phone number, and e-mail address, as well as the course for which the essay was originally written. Deadline for submissions: 3 pm, Friday, April 9, 2010.
