Description of Research
Summary Statement of Research Interests
Professor Messner researches the social construction of gender, with a particular interest in sport. His next book, It's All For the Kids: Gender, Families and Youth Sports, will be published in 2009. The book focuses on persistence and change in sex segregation among adult volunteer coaches in youth soccer and baseball/softball organizations. Of particular interest in this research is the ways that persistent sex segregation among adult volunteers fits into the construction of symbolic race and class community boundaries. Messner's current research focuses on (a) gender in sports media; (b) gender in advertising; (c) race, gender and youth culture in high school yearbooks.
