Professor Preston is the author of RACIAL AND ETHNIC POLITICS IN CALIFORNIA (1st and 2nd editions, 1991 and 1998), THE NEW BLACK POLITICS (1st and 2nd editions, 1981 and 1987), THE POLITICS OF BUREAUCRATIC REFORM: THE CASE OF THE CALIFORNIA STATE EMPLOYMENT SERVICE (1984), and co-editor of RACE, SEX AND POLICY PROBLEMS (1979). He was former Associate Editor of the NATIONAL POLITICAL SCIENCE REVIEW AND URBAN AFFAIRS QUARTERLY; he has been a reviewer for numerous professional journals and the National Science Foundation. As Special Advisor to the Provost, Professor Preston advises the Provost directly on diversity issues as well as other opportunity areas. Professor Preston was honored with the 2004 Frank J. Goodnow Award for his significant contributions to the political science profession and the American Political Science Association. He is past President of the Western Political Science Association, past President of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists, and has served as Vice-President of the American Political Science Association. In addition, he serves on the Board of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and on a Task Force of the Los Angeles Urban League. He has received numerous awards honoring his contributions and leadership, including teaching awards from the Mortar Board and the Department of Black Students.
