Detailed Statement of Research Interests

Paul Robert Appleby, PhD received his PhD in Social Psychology in 1999 from the University of Southern California. Since 2000, Dr Appleby has been a Research Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Southern California, and in 2003 he was also appointed as Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics (CHLA) at the Keck School of Medicine. Dr Appleby’s research has focused on HIV prevention and drug use prevention among youth and adults. As Principal Investigator for a State of California Universitywide AIDS Research Program (UARP) funded grant (2001-2003), his research focused on the effects of methamphetamine on risky sex for MSM. Dr Appleby has also conducted HIV research among diverse populations including at-risk women of color and heterosexual college students. Dr Appleby is currently a Co-Investigator on NIDA funded research at CHLA that is looking at sexual and drug taking risk among young MSM. Dr Appleby is also interested in using new technology such as interactive video for HIV and drug prevention programs. He is currently a Co-Investigator on an NIAID funded grant at the Annenberg School for Communication at USC that is evaluating the effectiveness of interactive video technology as a cutting edge youth oriented approach to HIV prevention.
