Press Release: Meeting the Sustainability Challenge

Meeting The Sustainability Challenge
Executive Education Program
USC Center for Sustainable Cities
Date: Nov. 11-13, 2005
Location: Los Angeles, California

Leaders from the municipal, business and non-profit sectors came together for an innovative and dynamic leadership training in urban sustainability offered by the University of Southern California’s Center for Sustainable Cities. The three-day Executive Education program provided a thorough introduction to sustainability concepts and gave participants practical tools for improving business and government operations. As noted by a participant, “The program was a very cutting edge discussion of sustainability.”

Meeting the Sustainability Challenge provided participants with an integrated understanding of sustainability ideas, measures and practices. Curriculum components included Sustainability as a Business Development and Management Strategy, Sustainability in Architecture, Design and Construction, and Sustainability in Urban Land Use, Conservation, and Watershed Practices.

The weekend’s keynote speakers included engineer Braden Allenby, architect Elizabeth Moule, and Andy Lipkis, president of TreePeople. Major topics included life-cycle assessment, facility design and management, sustainability indicators and socially responsible investment. The Executive Education program also included an official US Green Building Council, LEED-NC Introductory 101 Workshop.

Participants found that Meeting the Sustainability Challenge “offered an important opportunity to understand the emerging issues and thinking on sustainability” and found that “much of the discussion pointed out areas of new thinking and practices.” They also said the program provided a “ rich cadre of knowledgeable, informative and engaging speakers.”
