Graduate Geographers: Graduate Students Present at AAG Annual Meeting

While there, some of USC’s graduate students put aside some time to present their ongoing research to their peers.
Among those who presented were Julianne Gard, who shared her work titled, “GIS on the Margin: Contextualizing the non-expert user,” during a GIS Specialty Group Paper Competition session. Mona Seymour also presented her research on urban wildlife titled, “Placing parrots: Establishing Space in the City for Exotic Wildlife.”
Undergraduate Geographers: Professor Michael Dear leads six undergraduate students in GEOG 410 on a trip to Tijuana to curate a show titled “Hay Una Linea Que Hizo de un Rancho una Ciudad Global” (loosely translated as: “Once upon a time there was a line that made a global city out of a ranch”). The students' research for the class will be converted into a exhibit at La Casa de Tunel, a new art and cultural center at the border crossing that once held the entrance to a smuggler's tunnel to the United States. see the video>
Graduate Geographers: This Fall, the USC Geography Department will be welcoming new graduate students whose wide-ranging interests include everything from animal geography to conservation planning. learn more>
Undergraduate Geographers: Recent graduates accepted to top graduate programs.
Both Juliet Kahne and Sonia Yue-Chuen Lam of the Class of 2008 were admitted to top graduate programs scheduled to begin this fall. Kahne was admitted to King's College in London and Lam, who will be studying social anthropology, was admitted to Oxford University.
Geography Alums: Steven Flusty awarded tenure at York University.
Steven Flusty (USC Geography, PhD, 2004) was recently awarded tenure at the Department of Geography at York University in Toronto, Canada. In 2004, Flusty was awarded a USC College 'Best Dissertation' Award in addition to having his dissertation published by Routledge under the title 'De-Coca-Colonization: Making the Globe From the Inside Out.'
Undergraduate Geographers: Greg Elwood and Park ling presented their research on "The Historical Land Use of the Griffith Park East Bank" to the Griffith Park Master Plan Working Group. This research was prepared for the City Project, a public advocacy law firm, as part of their work for GEOG 494: "The Professional Geographer."
Undergraduate Geographers: Mia Costa, Juliet Kahne, and Jacob Vawter presented papers at a special meeting of the Los Angeles Geographic Society.
Undergraduate Geographers: Accomplishments at the annual meeting of the California Geographic Society in Chico, CA.
Geography at USC was well represented by our students at the annual meeting of the California Geographic Society in Chico, CA on May 3, 2008.
Gregory Elwood presented both a map titled " Primitive, Dispersed Campsites at Cuddeback Dry Lake" and a paper titled "Cuddeback Dry Lake: A Study in Recreational Land Use." Gregory also chaired on of the undergraduate paper sessions.
Mia Christine Costa recieved an award for $100 for her poster, "Indicators of Nutritional Affluence in Whittier, California."
Juliet Kahne presented a portion of her honors thesis, "Continuity in the Silver Lake Landscape: 'Alternative' Spaces as Cultural Representation." We also learned at the CGS meeting that Juliet will be recieving a $500 Scholarship from the Los Angeles Geographic Society.
Park Ling presented a paper, "An Exploration of Post-Katrina Recovery: The Use of Spatial Video and GIS to Assass Persistent Health Risk."Jacob F. Vawter presented his paper, "Geographical Perspectives on Regional Development in the Greater Mekong Subregion"
Andrew Isner, one of the first students admitted to our new GIST Masters Program, presented hi paper, "GIS Suitability Model of Preferred Habitat for the California Spotted Owl in Sequoia National Park.
