  Plans for a new cathedral in Los Angeles were finalized after St. Vibiana's was condemned by the city in 1996. Blessing of the new site, overlooking the Hollywood Freeway, took place in 1997, construction began in 1998. The new Cathedral, the centerpiece of the largest Catholic archdiocese in the United States, was completed in Spring 2002, it is the first Roman Catholic Cathedral to be erected in the western United States in thirty years. The design by Spanish architect, Jose Rafael Moneo, includes a 1900 seat cathedral, bell tower, administrative center, the Cardinal's residence, and a large public plaza.
