Meet the Undergraduate GEOGRAPHY Majors.

The Formation of a USC Undergraduate Geography Club

It is with great pleasure to announce the formation of an undergraduate club / society for Geography majors and minors at USC.

On March 25, 2005, a group of about a dozen undergraduates convened to establish the club.  Also present were about 10 Geography graduate students who came to cheer on the undergrads, plus some staff (Billie and Onita) were on-hand.  A great lunch was provided and everyone ate and was VERY happy.  Among the faculty in attendance were David Pepper and Steve Koletty, both of whom have performed sterling service toward creating a community of Geography undergrads at USC.  Michael Dear hosted the occasion, along with John Wilson.  Steve Koletty spoke about careers in Geography, and USC Career Counselor Mikelynn Romero also advised the audience about career planning.

The following undergraduates were elected as officers in the club:

  • Co-Presidents: Marina Jordan-Viola (Sophomore) & Darrell Schultz (Sophomore)
  • Program Officers: Lee McAuliffe (Freshman) & Tyler Claxton (Junior)
  • Liaison with LAS College Dean's Office: Lauren Akins (Senior)
The first actions of the club will be:
  • Launch a friendly competition to name the new organization, with a prize of $100 donated by the Department of Geography to the club in the name of the winner.
  • Establish a constitution for the club so that it can gain recognition and funding from USC.
  • Meet at least once more before the end of the semester (spring 2005).
If you were not at the meeting on March 25, 2005, you can check out the fun in a series of photographs posted in the department.  Be sure not to miss future events including:
  • Soccer / BBQ: Sunday, April 17, 2005 - 1:00 PM
  • Commencement / Geography Reception: Friday, May 13, 2005 - 12:00 noon
Michael Dear expressed that, "It has been a long ambition of mine to see the birth of an undergraduate Geography club.  Now, we have one.  I am truly delighted by this, and am fully committed to making it a success.  I want to thank all those folks who put in time and effort to get us to this point.  Special thanks to Doc Steve and Doc Pepper, and very special thanks to all you majors and minors who came together with such enthusiasm for the club.  This is the start of something BIG, I know it!"
