Description of Research

Summary Statement of Research Interests
At a time when the world is growing "smaller" due to the global economy, the internet and other developments, speaking more than one language and feeling comfortable in more than one culture have become indispensable tools. I am a firm believer in supplying my students with what they need to be competitive on the job market and in helping them along on their journey into the uncharted territory of a foreign culture and language. I am trying to make this experience as interesting, stimulating and thought-provoking as possible. Innovative and diverse teaching tools, the most up-to-date information and creativity are key to a successful and enjoyable classroom environment - I strive to provide just that! I was born in Germany, received my B.A. from the University of Hamburg and then decided to move oversees. I “landed at the Californian shore,” earned an M.A. from USC and transferred to UCLA for my Ph.D. Over the past several years, I taught all levels of German language including business German, graduate and undergraduate classes in culture and civilization, film, translation, linguistics and literature at Arizona State, San Diego State and several other universities. My research interests focus on (East German) women writers and second language acquisition.
