Careers
If you are considering making an investment in your future by enrolling in one of USC College’s Geographic Information Science (GIS) programs, here are a few facts about this career choice.
The U.S. Department of Labor has identified geotechnology as one of the three most important emerging and evolving fields of study in our country, along with nanotechnology and biotechnology
There are good job prospects for those with GIS skills and the applications for this field are expanding. Police departments use GIS to allocate resources to crime prone areas; public health officials use GIS to locate cancer “hot spots” which can be associated with toxic waste sites; transportation planners use GIS to unravel rush-hour congestion, wildlife biologists use GIS to map the critical habitats of endangered species.
Job opportunities are growing and diversifying as geospatial technologies prove their value in ever more areas, and training in GIS is becoming a requisite job skill for many professions. Indeed, there are more opportunities than trained professionals to fill them. The continuing expansion of technical capabilities and availability of geo-referenced data means this trend will continue.
