Post-Doctoral Fellowship for 2008-10

The Institute for British and Irish Studies at the University of Southern California in conjunction with the history department at USC welcomes applications for a two-year post-doctoral fellowship for 2008-2010 in British and Irish history.

Andrew W. Mellon fellowships in the humanities were established through an endowment gift to USC College in 1976.  The goal of the fellowships is to nourish humanistic scholars early in their careers.  Fellows are provided an opportunity to enrich their knowledge, skills, perspectives, and qualifications for a successful academic career.

In recognition of USC’s considerable strengths in British and Irish history, one fellowship will be awarded in this subject.  The grant is open to all areas of British and Irish history.

The fellow will be responsible for teaching one course each semester at USC.  The fellow will have research space and privileges at the Huntington Library as well as in the department.  The stipend will be $43,000 per academic year (late August through mid-May) plus $1,000 for research and travel plus competitive fringe benefits (including medical insurance) available to all full-time visiting faculty at USC.

Applicants should have received their Ph.D within the last seven years from date of the appointment. The grant is not restricted to graduates of North American universities. There is no application form.  Interested candidates should send a letter of application accompanied by three copies of a 1-2 page statement of their proposed work, plans for teaching, and a curriculum vitae.  Three letters of reference should be sent directly to the committee chair named below.  Applications must be postmarked by March 31.  The appointment of a fellow should be announced by late April.  For further information please contact:

IBIS is delighted to announce that Polly Ha is our Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow for 2007-8.  A graduate of Yale (AB, 2002)  and Cambridge (PhD, 2006), Dr Ha is spending the year on two projects: a manuscript under contract with Stanford University Press on early modern English Presbyterianism and a collection of essays on the reception of the continental reformation in Britain and Ireland.
