The A2A database contains catalogues describing archives held throughout England and dating from the 900s to the present day.


AHDS History

The History section of the Arts and Humanities Data Service provides access to digital resources created by historical research, learning and teaching.


AIM25: Archives in London and the M25 Area

AIM25 aims to provide electronic access to the archival catalogues of over ninety higher education institutions and learned societies within the greater London area.


Archives Hub
The Archives Hub provides descriptions of about 20,000 archival items held by more than 150 UK collleges and universities.

Archon

The ARCHON Directory includes contact details for record repositories in the United Kingdom and also for institutions elsewhere in the world which have substantial collections of British manuscripts.

Bodleian Library

The Bodleian Library is the main research library of the University of Oxford. It is also a copyright deposit library, and its manuscript collections are used by scholars from around the world.

 
British Library

The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom, and receives a copy of every publication produced in the UK and Ireland.  It is also a major repository for manuscripts, from the pre-Christian era to the present day.


COPAC

Copac is a union catalogue that provides access to the merged online catalogues of 24 major university research libraries in the UK and Ireland (including the British Library, the National Library of Scotland, and the National Library of Wales/Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru).


Economic and Social Data Service

The Economic and Social Data Service is a national data archiving and dissemination service, based on a collaboration between (1) UK Data Archive, University of Essex; (2) Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of Essex; (3) Manchester Information and Associated Services, University of Manchester; and (4) Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research (CCSR), University of Manchester.


Folger Shakespeare Library

Access to HAMNET, the Folger Shakespeare Library's online catalogue.


Huntington Library

Huntington Library's collections include rare books and manuscripts in British history and literature, including many 15th-century books and materials in the history of science, maritime history, and Renaissance exploration and cartography. 


India Office

The India Office contains the documentary archives of the administration in London of the pre-1947 government of India.

 
Inns of Court Libraries

A union catalogue for the libraries of Inner Temple, Gray’s Inn, Middle Temple, and Lincoln’s Inn.


King's College Estates

Online catalogue of the records of estates (164 estates in 30 counties) held by King's College, Cambridge.  Founded in 1441, the College's endowment included many confiscated "alien priories," English dependencies of foreign religious houses.  The charters, accounts, and court records of these lands extend back in some cases to the 11th century.


Lambeth Palace

Lambeth Palace Library is the historic library of the archbishops of Canterbury and the principal library and record office for the history of the Church of England.

 
Manorial Documents Register

The Manorial Documents Register (MDR) identifies the location of manorial records. The MDR is partially computerized--Wales, the Isle of Wight, Hampshire, Norfolk, Surrey, Middlesex and the three Ridings of Yorkshire are available online.

 
Manuscript Sources for British History

RJ Olney from the Historical Manuscripts Commission completed this online guide in 1995 with the aim of providing advice for graduate students on the use of manuscript sources for British History.

 

Marsh's Library

Founded in 1701, Marsh's Library was the first public library in Ireland and contains over 25,000 books relating to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, covering medicine, law, science, travel, navigation, mathematics, music, surveying and classical literature.


Modern Records Centre

This site provides access to summary information about the holdings of this University of Warwick centre for sources in British labour history, industrial relations and industrial politics.

A web-based guide to more than 400 collections of overseas missonary materials held in the UK. 

 

The National Archives

The National Archives, formerly known as the Public Record Office, is the official depository for all central government records. It houses one of the largest archival collections in the world, spanning 1000 years of British history, from Domesday Book of 1086 to government papers recently released to the public.

 
The National Archives of Ireland

The National Archives of Ireland holds the records of the modern Irish state.


The National Archives of Scotland

Headed by the Keeper of the Records of Scotland, the NAS selects, preserves, and makes available the national archives of Scotland.


The National Library of Ireland

The National Library of Ireland contains the world's largest collection of Irish documentary material: books, manuscripts, newspapers, periodicals, drawings, photographs, maps, and other material relating to Irish history.

National Register of Archives

The NRA is a central point for the collection and dissemination of information about the nature and location of manuscripts relating to British history. It currently consists of over 44,000 unpublished lists and catalogues that describe archival holdings in the United Kingdom and overseas.

 
Newton: Cambridge University Libraries

NEWTON is the online catalogue for the libraries of the University, including Cambridge University Library and its dependent libraries, and most faculty, departmental and college libraries.

 
Portcullis, Gateway to the Archives of Parliament

An electronic catalogue containing descriptions of around 3 million records.


Public Record Office of Northern Ireland

The repository for central and local government in Northern Ireland, PRONI also holds records and papers belonging to private individuals.

The Royal Irish Academy Library

The Library of the Royal Irish Academy boasts unique manuscript, pamphlet and early printed book collections.  Its collection of c.2,000 manuscripts includes the largest corpus of Irish language manuscripts in a single repository, the oldest surviving Irish manuscript, the Cathach, or Psalter of St. Columba, and other important early texts.

The Royal Society

Founded in 1660, the Royal Society is dedicated to promoting excellence in science in the UK, and its library contains many unique records of scientific achievements over the centuries.



Scottish Archive Network

Provides a single electronic catalogue to the holdings of more than 50 Scottish archives.

 
UK Data Archive

The UK Data Archive (UKDA) is curator of the largest collection of digital data in the social sciences in the UK and houses AHDS History, a major collection of computerised historical material.

 
The Women’s Library

The Women's Library is a cultural centre, housing the most extensive collection of women's history in the UK.
