AHDS History

The History section of the Arts and Humanities Data Service provides access to digital resources created by historical research, learning and teaching.


AHRC Centre for Editing Lives and Letters (CELL)

Includes editions of materials related to Bacon, Boyle, Erasmus, Harvey, and others.


Anglo-American Legal Tradition (AALT)

Digitized images of medieval and early modern documents from The National Archives; the number of images are projected to expand by about 400,000 a year.  This website operates under a license from TNA and includes several paleography exercises, as well as several helpful essays by Robert Palmer.

A varied collection of sources from The National Archives.

Avalon Project at Yale University

Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads

(Charles) Booth Online Archive

A searchable resource of the original records from Booth's survey into life and labour in London, dating from 1886-1903, as well as the Booth family papers from 1799 to 1967.

A treasure trove of links, including Middle English and Modern English editions.


Corpus of Middle English Verse and Prose

Based at the University of Michigan, home of the Middle English dictionary.


The Court of Chivalry

Drawing on archives in the College of Arms and Arundel Castle, this site details more than 700 cases brought before the Court of Chivalry during its heyday between 1634 and 1640. Most relate to defamation and slander.


Dime Novels and Penny Dreadfuls

Stanford University’s Dime Novel and Story Paper Collection consists of over 8,000 individual items, which are available in digital images and online texts.

Henry III Fine Rolls

The Henry III Fine Rolls Project is publishing  the Fine Rolls of Henry III from 1216 down to 1248, along with a search engine.  


Holinshed's History of Scotland

A facsimile of the 1585 edition.  This site also contain Holinshed's book on Henry VIII and his chronicles of Britain.

Homosexuality in 18th-Century England

A collection of texts, including trial documents, from 1624 to 1791.

 
Internet Library of Early Journals

A digital library of 18th and 19th century journals, including Gentleman’s Magazine, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, and Notes and Queries.


Irish Foreign Policy

Documents on Irish Foreign Policy is an ongoing project of the Royal Irish Academy, the Department of Foreign Affairs and the National Archives of Ireland.  It provides searchable sources on Irish foreign policy since 1919.

LION: Literature Online

NDAD: Official Datasets


The National Digital Archive of Datasets (NDAD) offers online access to archived digital datasets and documents from UK central government departments, dating back to 1963.

A fully searchable online edition of the Proceedings of the Old Bailey, London from 1674 to 1834.



Parker Library (Corpus Christi) on the Web


Still in development, this site provides access to the manuscripts in the historic Parker Library at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.

 


Pepys Diary


A day-by-day (i.e., blog-like) presentation of the diaries of Samuel Pepys: 1 January 1660 was published on 1 January 2003. Based on the 1893 edition.

Prerogative Court of Canterbury

The National Archives at Kew has put online more than a million wills from the "top" court, the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC), plus supporting records (court cases about disputed wills, inventories of goods, and accounts of executors).  This site allows you to search the database online by name, date, place, or occupation, but you have to pay to see an actual will.

State Papers Domestic, Elizabeth

Digital Images of twenty-five volumes of the State Papers Domestic Elizabeth (TNA SP/12) are available on a Hull University web site under a non-commercial licence from TNA.

Bible in English
