British Churches Album

Offers images and descriptions of more than 1200 churches, mostly (but not exclusively) from the southeast.


British Printed Images to 1700

Drawn mostly from the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, this project will offer by late 2008 more than 10,000 printed images from early modern Britain.


Charting the Nation: Maps of Scotland, 1550-1740

Over 3500 images for the study of the history of cartography, architectural history, genealogy, military history, environmental history and archaeology.  See also the maps available from the National Library of Scotland.

Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi (CVMA)


Contains over 15,000 images of medieval stained glass in Great Britain.

County Durham: Pictures in Print

A union catalogue, with zoomable images, of printed maps and topographical prints of  County Durham created before 1860, in several library collections.

Digital Archive of European Architecture

Professor Jeffery Howe’s well-indexed site contains images of many British buildings and historic sites.

English Emblem Books

Emblem books--which combined images with text, often in a sort of riddle form--flourished between 1600 and 1900.  This site introduces and reproduces them.


English Local History Images

Maintained by David Postles, this site offers pictures of churches
and other architectural remains, mainly from the Midlands.

Sheela Na Gig Project

Sheela na gigs are carvings of women exposing their genitalia, usually found in churches constructed in the central middle ages.  They survive today especially in Ireland and Britain.  This site catalogs sheela na gigs in Britain, offering photographs and extensive commentary.
