From the Director

The Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West— is a new collaboration begun in the summer of 2004 between the University of Southern California and the Huntington Library.

Bill Deverell, Director

The Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West (ICW) is an innovative collaboration between the Huntington Library and the University of Southern California.  We exist to further the study of the history and culture of California and the American West and to bring the fruits of that study to the widest possible audience.

The Institute was formed five years ago, and we have been busy and productive since then.  Our work cuts across academic and more public aspects of historical research and scholarship, and we focus on several key arenas or themes of the fascinating history of the American West.  I urge you to examine our website for a review of the Institute’s activities and emphases.

During the academic year 2009-2010, I will be on a fellowship appointment as the Frederick Beinecke Senior Fellow at the Beinecke Rare Book Library of Yale University.  In my absence, the Institute will be more than capably served by Senior Fellow David Igler of the University of California, Irvine and by our on-going administrative director, Kim Matsunaga.  Please direct any questions you have either to me at deverell@usc.edu, to David at digler@uci.edu, or to Kim at kmatsuna@usc.edu.
