ICW Scholars and Journalists GroupModerators:
The ICW Scholars and Journalists Working Group is designed to draw together scholars who write on California and the West with journalists (print, radio, and television) who do the same. We hope by mixing the two allied and closely related professions to be able to foster closer working and intellectual relationships between scholars and journalists. This may take the form of collaborative conferences and workshops, team-teaching opportunities, or other opportunities to work closely with one another. As a way to begin, we expect that the group will explore themes in western and California history germane to both professions. On March 28th, the group met to hear Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez discuss how he approaches the topic of immigration in his work; that meeting was followed with one on April 21st, in which the historian Dave Gutierrez offered his thoughts on the same topic. Further thematic explorations are likely to focus upon politics and political mobilization, environmental concerns, and urban issues and concerns.
