ICW Medicine/Public Health GroupModerator:
David Sloane, USC
Description:
While scholarship in the areas of medicine and public health has largely focused on developments in the great cities of the East and Midwest, the American West has a rich and important story to be told. In recent years, scholars from a variety of fields have begun uncovering the ethnic tensions and professional concerns that have propelled medical practice and pubic health policies in this region. This ICW working group takes as its primary focus the discussion of medical and public health history from the present backwards. While the working group centers its attention on the West, we will also consider those issues in comparative perspective, considering how the history of medicine and public health in other places in the world mirror that of the American West. Scholars will present papers prior to the sessions for discussion three times a year. Invited participants are from a variety of fields, creating a lively atmosphere for the discussion of the past, present, and future of medicine and public health. The group will sponsor occasional lectures, workshops, or conferences open to wider audiences interested in explorint public health topics and themes. Group members:
Emily Abel, UCLA Graduate student: Matt Newsom Kerr
