Daniel Lewis, Huntington Library

Description:

This working group will look at particular modes of science and technology in California and the West, from astronomy to earth science, from biotech to nanotech.  The initial focus will be on the aerospace industry in southern California.  This initiative will chart the deep and diverse influences of aerospace on the growth of southern California as a region, and southern California's equally fundamental contributions to the development of aerospace.  The aerospace project will identify and preserve important documents, audiovisual records, and artifacts, and conduct oral histories; in addition to preserving aerospace history, it will promote historical research by sponsoring visiting students and scholars, hosting conferences, and providing a clearinghouse of information.  The working group includes a range of expertise on aerospace, including members from local universities, NASA centers, military bases, museums, and the industry itself.
