Academic Advisement for Undergraduate Students
A staff advisor is available in the Department of
Kinesiology to advise current majors as well as other students who are
considering a major in Kinesiology. Laura Ames,
Student Services Advisor, coordinates all undergraduate academic
advisement in the department. To schedule an appointment, please
contact her via email: ames@usc.edu or by phone (213) 740-2480. She is located in PED-109.
Entering freshmen or transfer students who intend to
pursue a degree in kinesiology should meet with Laura Ames during the
Summer Orientation Program prior to their first semester at USC.
Early advisement is very important because the program of study for a
kinesiology degree will take a minimum of four years to complete.
Students must work closely with their academic advisor in order to stay
on track and complete their degree in a timely fashion.
Mandatory Advisement for Kinesiology majors
It is mandatory for Kinesiology majors to meet with
their academic advisor each semester in order to register for
classes. Students must receive advisement before the "hold" on
their registration is removed. In addition to mandatory
advisement, the academic advisor will give D-clearances for upper
division coursework and prerequisite waivers, if approved.
Faculty members are excellent resources for
undergraduate research opportunities within the department (EXSC-490,
Directed Research, and EXSC-491 Laboratory Experience in Exercise
Science). Faculty can also help in post-graduation planning for
students who wish to explore possible career options with a kinesiology
degree.
Pre-Health Academic Support
Since a large percentage of Kinesiology majors have
a pre-health focus (i.e., medical, physical therapy, dental, pharmacy,
etc.), we encourage our students to visit the Office of College
Advising Pre-Health Professions Program for additional services in the
academic process. Regularly scheduled workshops are held
throughout the academic year with guest speakers on a variety of
different topics including academic curricula, extracurricular
preparation, volunteer experiences, research involvement, and the
application process. The Office of College Advising is open 8:30
a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday in CAS-120. Call (213) 740-2534 or
visit their website at: http://www.usc.edu/dept/LAS/cas/Pre-Health/
