Kenneth Nealson
THE WASHINGTON POST published an Associated Press story quoting Kenneth Nealson, holder of the Wrigley Chair in Environmental Studies and professor of earth sciences and biological sciences, about the discovery on Mars of perchlorate, a chemical found in rocket fuel. While scientists say that the discovery doesn’t rule out life — microbes in Chile use the chemical as a source of energy — others view it as unfavorable, the story noted. “Perchlorate is not a particularly nice thing to find in the soil,” Nealson said. “No one hunting for life would be happy to see it in any sort of abundance.”
