SCIENCE published a review of research on the roots of moral behavior in the brain that highlighted a study by Antonio Damasio, holder of the David Dornsife Chair in Neuroscience and professor of psychology and neurology. In a 2007 paper in Nature, Damasio and colleagues reported that people with damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex made abnormal judgments on hypothetical moral dilemmas that forced them to consider whether it was permissible to sacrifice the life of one person to save several others.
