Bloody Sunday

7. This is one of the murals in the "bog-side" of Derry, Northern Ireland, where Bloody Sunday occurred. This young man being carried is 18-year-old Jackie Duddy, one of the first people killed on Bloody Sunday. The man with the handkerchief is Father Daly, who was fleeing the bullets and stopped in his tracks to assist Duddy who had fallen face-first to the ground. Daly administered Duddy's last rites amid bullets that rained down on the civil rights demonstrators who had gathered to protest internment without trial. The British soldier with the weapon is stepping on the blood-stained "civil rights" banner. The murals were the voice of the Catholic community, one of the means by which they communicated their grievances.
