FINANCIAL AID

It is the policy of the university and of the Psychology department to support students who have been accepted and are making timely progress in their graduate studies. The standard package provides five years of support, consisting of a stipend, specified units of tuition remission, and health benefits. The package may be structured using fellowships that are provided by or administered by the university, research assistantships (RAs) that most often come from faculty research funding, teaching assistantships (TAs) that require duties as a laboratory or discussion section instructor, and various other sources of funding.

Provost and Diversity fellowships are awarded through university-wide competition. They carry a stipend of $25,000 per year, plus 24 units of tuition for up to five years of graduate work, payment of fees, and health/dental benefits. Two of the supported years are from "straight fellowship," with the other three being provided from RA, TA, or other sources. Nominations for these fellowships are made by the department, with the uderstanding of realization that very few are likely to be awarded by our candidates, simply because of the size of the competition pool.

The awards that will be provided to most of the students who are admitted will consist of a five-year package, with two of the years being from named fellowship (e.g., Ahmanson, Kellerman, or Valentine), these funds being provided by private foundations and administered by the university. These support packages provide for an $18,000 per year stipend, with health/dental benefits, and 24 units of tuition remission, except for the final year, in which fewer units are needed for completion of doctoral requirements.

Various other fellowships are available to particular applicants, i.e., wherein the donor has placed restrictions on who can qualify.

You are encouraged to look at the Graduate School site that describes the full range of fellowships, and bring to our attention those for which you might qualify.

The university requires that an Application for Graduate Fellowship be submitted as part of the application process. This application can be done online or by form, with the links being provided on this web site.
