Internships

Participating in governmental and political internships pays dividends to students in numerous ways: gaining a competitive edge in the world of politics, obtaining practical experience, building invaluable relationships with potential future employers, and earning college credit.

As most employers well know, offering internships benefits them in many ways too: the inflow of new ideas and attracting potential future employees, to name a few. The Unruh Institute helps students find internships that match their needs and provides guidance to them before their internship. Unruh Institute interns took internships in places such as the Washington Office of the U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, the LA Democratic Convention, the Office of the Governor, various DA's Offices, political consulting firms, and media and non-profit organizations.

The Institute offers a course, POSC 395, designed to help students to gain firsthand experience in the world of politics.  Depending on the number of hours worked at the internship, students can earn up to 8 units of credit.

Students are welcome to walk into the Institute to look through our catalogs to find up-to-date information about past and current employers offering internships (VKC 263). Students interested in spending a semester in Washington, D.C. and undertaking an intership should visit  Washington DC Semester Program.

If you are an employer and wish to host an intern, please e-mail us information on your institution, the duties and responsibilities interns will assume and what they can expect to learn from working in your institution, along with your contact information.
