INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES
Summer 2007
“This internship has been the most rewarding experience I have had thus far with professional work. There are always people calling in asking for help in different matters, there are always new businesses opening up within the district, new legislation, new, projects, and new individuals to meet.” --Intern for a California State Senator “The incredible amount of hands-on work I was allowed to do was the strongest point of my internship. I’ve worked in several newsrooms, and the people here were the nicest and most willing to work with me. Plus, the chance to meet some of the most powerful and important people on the planet on a daily basis always made things exciting.” --Intern for NBC News Channel “I met Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani, as well as LAPD Chief William Bratton, while covering a press conference on gang violence. I wrote two front page stories that appeared on the same day—and that was just my first day!” --Intern for Pasadena Star News “Being able to take the lead in writing research briefings and finding information for the Education Study Committee was a great experience, and I feel that my knowledge of public policy (specifically, LAUSD governance) has grown 100-fold through this experience.” --Intern for the League of Women Voters “Interns were able to attend various different meetings, such as the Mayor’s monthly staff meeting. In addition, interns are really able to see policies and procedures in action on a day-to-day basis. I got the opportunity to see how the Mayor works with his constituents and the policies which go along with getting this accomplished.” --Intern for Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa “I learned a lot, not only about the Senate, but also how to interact in a working environment. I learned a lot about the fine art of business net-working, and how important it is to make contacts on the Hill. I don’t know if I would ultimately like to work in Congress, but the experience gave me a complete insider’s view into how Hill life is run.” --Intern for Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee “The environment, especially during session, was high energy, high demand, and high stress. I personally was forced to test myself, my patience, and even my self-worth when the office got intense…overall I knew I grew as an individual.” --Intern for United States Congress Member |
