Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics

Programs

The mission of the Unruh Institute is to engage USC students in the political process as well as to facilitate the discussion of relevant issues across campus. Our programs are nonpartisan, and designed to motivate, encourage and inspire students to learn about the world of politics. The Institute operates a number of activities in four broad program areas:

I.    Unruh Adjunct Lecturers

The Institute sponsors courses in the Political Science Department that are taught by political practitioners. Students have the opportunity to learn from former public officials and other political practitioners who are experts in their fields.

II.    Student Internships and Scholarships

Facilitating student internships is an integral part of the Unruh Institute’s mission. The goal of the internship program is to help students make connections with what they learn in class and a practical experience in the world of politics. The Institute’s internship program serves approximately 100 students a year, with students interning in the offices of elected officials, non-profit organizations, and political consultants. The Institute also introduces students to the political process through opportunities such as the Sacramento Legislative Seminar.

III.    Lecture Series, Conferences and Political Practioners on Campus

The Institute sponsors several lecture series, conferences, and provides funding to faculty who are interested in bringing speakers to their classes. Speakers have included Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Ralph Nader, Jesse Jackson, Willie Brown, Jerry Brown, State Attorney General Bill Lockyer, Civil Rights Activist Dolores Huerta, Former Assemblyperson Richard Katz, and State Senator Gloria Romero.

IV.  Unruh Scholars

Each semester outstanding undergraduates are nominated by Political Science faculty members to participate in the Undergraduate Scholars program. Scholars enroll in POSC 490, Directed Research. At the end of the semester, the scholars share their work with other students and faculty by participating in a panel discussion. Scholars also receive a gift certificate to the USC bookstore as recognition of their participation.
