Student Internships, Scholarships and Awards

Internships: The Institute’s internship program serves approximately 100 students a year, with students interning in the offices of elected officials, city, county and state offices, non-profit organizations, and political consulting firms. The current internship database includes over 900 internship listings in Los Angeles, Sacramento, Washington D.C., and abroad.

Students enroll in POSC 395 to receive academic credit for the internship and can enroll for fall, spring or summer. The course requirements include a poster presentation on their internship experience, attendance at two Unruh events, and a policy analysis paper. Grades are determined based on the policy analysis paper, the quality of the poster presentation and an evaluation by their internship supervisor.

Summer Internship Program & Awards: The Unruh Institute of Politics launched the Summer Political Internship Program to enable students to take advantage of intern placements when they are not busy with the demanding schedule of the regular academic semester.  The program provides a bridge between the academic studies of policy, government, and politics and the practical fields in which those studies can be applied.

Sacramento Seminar: Each February the Institute selects up to 10 students to travel to Sacramento to participate in a Legislative Seminar. Students have the opportunity to meet with elected officials and their staffs, lobbyists, and members of the media. The Institute covers airfare and hotel costs and works with the California Center for Education in Public Affairs, Inc. to organize the panels and reception at the Seminar.

Conference Funding: The Unruh Institute has funding available for undergraduate and graduate students interested in attending or presenting at a conference that is in line with the mission of the Institute.  Awards are generally available for approximately $100 to $500. Support is meant to defray the cost of travel or fees and not to cover the entire expense of the conference. For more information or to send in a request for funding contact the Unruh Institute via email at unruhins@usc.edu or (213) 740-8964.
