National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB)
The National Ocean Sciences Bowl competition creates teams of high school students across the United States and tests their knowledge of topics related to the study of the oceans. The competition encourages the students, along with their teachers and parents, to learn more about the oceans and to raise public understanding of the national investment in ocean-related research.
The USC Wrigley Institute, along with the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab, are proud sponsors of the Los Angeles regional competition for teams of high school students from around Southern California. They will host their 11th NOSB competition -- the Los Angeles "Surf Bowl" -- on March 6, 2010.
Objectives of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl
- To broaden the awareness and understanding of high school students, teachers, and parents of the latest scientific research on the oceans and the impact of the oceans on global climate and weather, economics, history and culture.
- To expose teachers to the value of using the oceans in disciplinary and cross-disciplinary science education to teach biology, physics, chemistry, geology and math.
- To help oceanographic research programs at university and other facilities establish a connection with members of pre-college communities.
